Eliminate empty runs at Port of Montreal

The Port of Montreal moves over 1.5 million TEUs annually through Cast, Racine, Maisonneuve, and Viau terminals — generating thousands of daily truck movements between the port, CN Rail intermodal yards, and destinations across Eastern Canada. PortChief connects Montreal carriers in real time so every truck leaves loaded, every mission finds a match, and demurrage costs disappear.

Terminal Network

12+ container terminals connected

PortChief integrates with all four international container terminals at the Port of Montreal, giving carriers and dispatchers a single dashboard to manage operations across the entire port. Whether your truck is headed to Cast or returning empty from Viau, PortChief finds the swap that saves you money.

Cast Terminal (Sections 73-80)
Operated by Montreal Gateway Terminals Partnership (MGTP), Cast Terminal is the Port of Montreal's largest container facility at 74 acres with a handling capacity of 800,000 TEU per year. Equipped with four high-speed ship-to-shore gantry cranes running 24-hour nonstop operations.
Racine Terminal
Also operated by Montreal Gateway Terminals Partnership, Racine Terminal spans 24.7 hectares with three wharves totalling 770 metres and a capacity of 500,000 TEU annually. The terminal can accommodate two post-Panamax ships simultaneously.
Maisonneuve Terminal (Section 68)
Operated by Termont Montreal Inc., Maisonneuve Terminal handles up to 500,000 TEU annually and serves as a key hub for Hapag-Lloyd, MSC, and OOCL container operations.
Viau Terminal (Section 52)
The newest container terminal at the Port of Montreal, Viau has been operated by Termont Montreal since 2016 with a capacity approaching 600,000 TEU. Features two post-Panamax cranes, five rubber-tire gantry cranes, and an automated truck-marshalling gate.

The Port of Montreal handled 1.51 million TEUs in 2025 across its four container terminals, with CN Rail's Taschereau Yard dispatching 1,500 intermodal units daily. That volume translates to thousands of truck movements between terminals, rail yards, and final destinations across Quebec and Ontario. Yet persistent congestion, chassis shortages, and uncoordinated dispatch mean carriers routinely deadhead between terminals.

2,400 TEUs Move Every Day — But Too Many Trucks Return Empty

Terminal yard congestion and delayed empty returns trigger demurrage fees of $150-500 per container, with carriers holding empties for days when return slots are unavailable.

Empty Run Rate
Up to 30% of drayage trips at Montreal's terminals return empty, representing millions of wasted kilometres per year across the port community.
Dispatcher Hours
Montreal dispatchers spend 2+ hours daily making phone calls and checking terminal websites to coordinate pickups, deliveries, and empty returns across four terminals and two rail networks.
