Eliminate empty runs at Port of Marseille

Marseille-Fos is the Mediterranean's premier gateway and home to CMA CGM's global headquarters. With 1.45 million TEU flowing through its terminals, thousands of truck missions cross between Fos-sur-Mer and the Marseille basins every day — and too many return empty. PortChief connects carriers in real time so every chassis leaves loaded.

Terminal Network

12+ container terminals connected

The Grand Port Maritime de Marseille (GPMM) spans two distinct zones — the western deep-water basins at Fos-sur-Mer and the eastern harbour in the city of Marseille — separated by 50 kilometres of motorway. PortChief maps every terminal, gate slot, and free-time deadline so carriers can match complementary missions across the entire port complex in seconds.

Eurofos (Terminal de la Mediterranee)
France's largest container terminal, operated by a joint venture between DP World and CMA CGM's Terminal Link. With 1,600 metres of quay, four of the world's tallest gantry cranes, and a capacity of 1.5 million TEU, Eurofos handles the lion's share of deep-sea container traffic at Marseille-Fos.
Seayard (FOS 2XL)
A joint venture between APM Terminals (42%), Terminal Investment Limited/MSC (50%), and COSCO (8%), Seayard covers 52 hectares with 850 metres of quay at 16-metre draft, accommodating up to four ultra-large vessels simultaneously.
Mourepiane Terminal
Located in the city basins, the 32-hectare Mourepiane terminal offers 952 metres of quay across five berths. With a capacity exceeding 250,000 TEU per year and 120 reefer plugs, Mourepiane is fully dedicated to short-sea services to North Africa.
GPMM Industrial Zone (Fos-Lavera-Berre)
The Fos-sur-Mer industrial-port zone hosts four interconnected platforms anchored by TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, INEOS, and LyondellBasell. This zone generates significant container drayage for chemical products, resins, and project cargo that overlaps with the main terminal circuits.

Marseille-Fos processed 1.45 million TEU in 2024 — a 9% year-on-year increase driven by surging transshipment volumes. As France's number-one port and the home base of CMA CGM, the 50-kilometre split between Fos deep-water terminals and Marseille city basins means trucks routinely deadhead in one direction.

The Solution

Enterprise-grade infrastructure

PortChief turns every empty run into a revenue opportunity. Our marketplace matches carriers with complementary container missions across Eurofos, Seayard, Mourepiane, and the Fos industrial zone — so a truck dropping an import at Fos Distriport can instantly pick up an export heading back to the same terminal.

For Carriers
Publish your available capacity after a drop-off at Eurofos or Seayard and get matched with a paying return mission in seconds. PortChief calculates exact kilometre savings, estimated earnings, and free-time deadlines before you accept.
For Freight Forwarders
Coordinate container movements across Marseille-Fos without owning a single truck. Browse live carrier availability by terminal, container type, and time window. Assign missions to the closest available driver and track execution from pickup to delivery.

The Challenge

Built for carriers who move containers

Empty kilometres are draining margins across the GPMM. The 50-kilometre split between Fos deep-water terminals and Marseille city basins means trucks routinely deadhead in one direction.

Empty Kilometres Are Draining Margins Across the GPMM

Seasonal spikes on North Africa short-sea routes, last-minute schedule changes from Mediterranean feeder services, and tight free-time windows at Eurofos and Seayard create an epidemic of empty runs that erodes carrier profitability.
